About the Miraculous Image of Our Lady of Las Lajas

Nuestra Señora de las Lajas

Consecration of St. Louis de Montfort To Jesus through MaryOn the borders between Colombia and Ecuador is a beautiful sanctuary, a wonder to its visitors. There is a venerated image of Our Lady of Las Lajas, and thousands and thousands of pilgrims from both countries visit each year and obtain many favors from God.

Back in the eighteenth century, María Mueses de Quiñones, a local woman from the village of Potosi, Colombia, often walked the six miles between her village and the neighbouring one of Ipiales. One day in 1754 as she was making the journey, she approached the place called Las Lajas (the Rocks), where the trail passes through a deep gorge of the Guaitara River. Maria never liked this part of the trail because there were rumors that a cave in Las Lajas was haunted.  Such superstitions remained among the converted Christian Indians.

Blessed Pope John Paul II and the Total Consecration to Jesus Through Mary

Blessed Pope John Paul II made the Total Consecration to Jesus Through Mary. In his apostolic letter, “Rosarium Virginis Mariae,” the Pope noted that his personal motto “Totus Tuus” (Totally Yours) was inspired by the Total Consecration.

Further, the Holy Father said that reading St. Louis de Montfort’s “True Devotion to the Blessed Virgin Mary” marked a turning point in his life. Blessed John Paul II talked about this in an Oct. 2000 address to the 8th International Mariological Colloquium in Rome. Blessed John Paul II noted that he had read and reread de Montfort’s book. “Then I understood that I could not exclude the Lord's Mother from my life without neglecting the will of God-Trinity,” he said, “who willed to begin and fulfill the great mysteries of the history of salvation with the responsible and faithful collaboration of the humble handmaid of Nazareth.”

The Rosary

In some form, the Rosary has been a part of Catholic prayer life for more than nine centuries. The Virgin Mary appeared to St. Dominic in 1208 and revealed the Rosary to him, asking that her devotion be spread throughout the world.

St. Dominic responded by preaching the Rosary, introducing it widely. After about a century, however, interest in and devotion to the Rosary declined significantly. After the Black Plague swept across Europe, the Mary chose Blessed Alan de la Roche to reestablish the devotion. A Dominican preacher, Blessed Alan also was visited by Jesus and St. Dominic, who challenged him to preach devotion to the Rosary.

In 1521, Another Dominican priest, Alberto da Castello, wrote a book he called “The Rosary of the Glorious Virgin Mary.” It marks the first time that the Rosary appeared in the form that it is prayed today.
